Jeff Leighton

Biography

Jeff pairs operations insight with electrical craft skill, bringing more than three decades in oil-and-gas to the classroom. He broke into the industry at Gulf/Petro-Canada’s Cochrane gas plant, first as a process operator and later as a maintenance electrician. In 1996 he moved to Shell’s Scotford Upgrader as an Electrical Specialist, ultimately becoming the site’s turnaround high-voltage lead and central maintenance planner. There he engineered safe-switching strategies up to 35 kV, built detailed SAP/Primavera outage schedules, and steered multi-million-dollar shutdowns to zero-incident completions. Known for practical innovation—such as the scaffold-and-shrink-wrap roof that cut tank-cleaning downtime—Jeff turns field problems into teaching moments on arc-flash risk, lock-out/tag-out, and troubleshooting. Whether he’s walking learners through a VFD trip or coaching crews on isolation boundaries, his calm, methodical style converts complex electrical theory into procedures technicians can use on the very next shift.
